Put yourself in the shoes of our homeless neighbors by joining

the Rescue Mission for Walk a Mile in My Shoes on Saturday, February 9th

Syracuse, NY: On Saturday, February 9th from 9 a.m. to noon, the Rescue Mission will hold its annual winter fundraising event, Walk a Mile in My Shoes.  The Walk will start and finish at the Rescue Mission Recreation Center located at 122 Dickerson Street in the Mission District.         Now in its fifth year, Walk a Mile in My Shoes offers people in the community an opportunity to identify with—and support—those who are homeless by experiencing just one aspect of their daily lives.  With limited access to transportation, homeless men, women and children must walk everywhere, often in the most inclement weather.

This year, Walk A Mile in My Shoes will be held in all four cities where the Rescue Mission conducts programs—Syracuse, Auburn, Binghamton, and our newest location—Ithaca.

A new feature this year will be addition of a three-mile walk, and participants will be able to choose between the one- and three-mile routes.  The registration desk will open at 9:15 a.m., with the three-mile walk departing at 9:45 a.m. and the one-mile walk starting at 10 a.m.

Walk participants raise funds by inviting family, friends and co-workers to support their efforts with financial pledges.  Registration fees are $25 for adults (13 and older) and $10 for children (6 through 12).  Children five and under are free.

For every $25 walkers add to their fundraising total, their names will be entered into a drawing for great prizes.  There will be multiple prizes and winners, along with brown bag raffle tickets for sale that day.  And all funds raised by this event will help the Rescue Mission serve more people in need.

There is plenty of free parking available adjacent to the Recreation Center and following the Walk, participants are invited to join the Rescue Mission and fellow walkers for hot beverages and snacks.

The Rescue Mission is committed to sharing hope, bringing an end to hunger and homelessness, changing lives and strengthening communities one person at a time.  The organization conducts programs in Syracuse, Auburn and Binghamton—and will soon open a supportive residence for homeless men in Ithaca.  It also operates 13 Thrifty Shopper stores and its newest retail venture, 3fifteen on the S.U. Hill.  For more information on the Rescue Mission, visit www.rmlifechanging.org.
