| Lack of education and job skills are major barriers that often perpetuate a cycle of poverty. Educational and vocational programs at our Motivational Learning Center help Rescue Mission clients and residents as well as needy people living in the community to gain the skills they need to break this cycle. | ||
| The Motivational Learning Center, 200 Gifford Street, Syracuse, is a computerized facility that helps adults of any literacy level prepare for a high school equivalency diploma or college studies, develop basic living skills and explore vocational opportunities. The Central New York Coalition for Adult and Continuing Education recognized the Rescue Mission for its excellence in providing adult education. | ||

| The Motivational Learning Center helps adults 18 and older who are in Rescue Mission programs--such as the Transformations incentive-based emergency shelter, the New Beginnings transitional living program or the Crossroads long-term supportive residence--as well as the poor and Safety Net clients of Onondaga County’s JobsPlus welfare-to-work program. | ||
| Rescue Mission clients and residents may sign up every Friday at 10 a.m. while community residents may sign up the first Friday of each quarter of the year at 9 a.m. at the Motivational Learning Center, 200 Gifford Street, Syracuse. For more information, call 315-472-3700. | ||
| In the early 1990s, after many years of serving the homeless and hurting in Central New York, the Rescue Mission realized it needed to offer educational services to help people achieve self-sufficiency and fulfillment. Statistics showed more than 60 percent of homeless adults had not finished high school and almost 40 percent were functionally illiterate. | ||
