| Homelessness can be an endless cycle of finding and losing a place to live unless someone steps in with support to help them get established. The Supported Transitions and Establishment Program (STEP) comes to the rescue by helping homeless individuals with disabilities find, set up and remain in safe, affordable apartments so they don’t ever have to live in a shelter again. For so many, STEP is a step in the right direction. | ||
| Supported Transitions and Establishment Program (STEP), located in the New Life Day Center, 155 Gifford Street, Syracuse, and accessible through the entrance in the 100 block of Seymour Street, helps homeless people with disabilities make supported transitions from the streets and shelters to permanent housing with the goal of establishment in the community. Resources include a housing coordinator, list of available apartments, help with moving and apartment setup and a year of support services. | ||
| STEP serves homeless men and women with disabilities who are 18 and older in the community. Individuals must be homeless and also have mental or physical disabilities, which include alcohol or drug addiction. | ||
| Individuals must complete an application and supply copies of their social security card, photo identification, birth certificate, proof of income (such as supplemental security income award letter, public assistance budget sheet or paycheck stubs), disability documentation from doctor or hospital and addiction treatment documentation. | ||
| STEP started in October 1998. | ||
